The Best Short Course RC Trucks

Short Course RC Truck Reviews

The DEERC 9201E 1:10 Fast Short Course RC Truck is a versatile RC short course truck that combines speed and durability for a thrilling experience. With its impressive features and ease of driving, it’ll appeal to both intermediate and experienced drivers.

One of the standout qualities is its speed and ability. It has a powerful motor that allows the trucks to reach speeds of up to 30 mph! Whether you’re racing, performing tricks or zooming around your neighborhood, this truck delivers an adrenaline-pumping experience.

It excels when it comes to durability too (as any truck should!). It’s built to handle rough play and does well on various terrains. It has a sturdy construction and advanced suspension that allows it to withstand bumps in the road.

Another great feature is the LED headlights which allow you to drive at any time of day (or night!).

In a 1/10 scale, this truck is large and imposing. This, coupled with the high speeds means you do need a lot of space to drive it.

There are two batteries included, each with a capacity of around 20 minutes. This is about average, so having a spare is very welcome. Note that if you are regularly hitting the top speeds, the battery will drain even faster. Changing the battery is a fiddle, as you need to remove the 4 pins that hold the case in place.

The control could be more ergonomic. I certainly found it became a little uncomfortable to hold over time, and other users have reported the same.

In conclusion, I’d happily recommend this model as the best short-course RC truck. The high speeds and versatility ensure it provides a thrilling experience, I just wish the battery life was a little longer.

You’ll already know that I’m a huge fan of Traxxas RC trucks, and their Traxxas 58094-1 2WD Slash Short Course Truck is, in my opinion, one of the best. With its impressive speed, durability and customization options, it caters to both beginners and seasoned hobbyists.

One of the stand-out features is its speed. This truck is capable of reaching speeds of up to 30 mph, which is very impressive given its small size. It’s equipped with a powerful motor, while the acceleration is smooth and consistent.

It’s been built to withstand tough terrains. The robust build quality ensures it can handle jumps, bumps and crashes without sustaining significant damage. The adjustable suspension means you can fine-tune its performance depending on what you’re doing.

The officially licensed Ford Raptor body features an injection molded grill, an integrated bumper, side mirrors and a tailgate for scale realism.

Another great feature is the waterproof electronics. This means it can be used in all weathers and across most terrains, even muddy tracks.

I was equally impressed with the ergonomic remote control. It’s comfortable for all-day driving and feels pretty robust too.

The customization options are extensive. The Traxxas Slash line offers a wide range of accessories and upgrade options, allowing users to personalize their RC truck to suit their preferences and style. Whether you fancy adding a different body shell or upgrading the motor, it’s easy with Traxxas’ accessories.

A couple of downsides. The first is the shock absorption which isn’t the best, leading to a bumpy ride on rough terrains. Some users have reported overheating of the motor, although I didn’t find this to be the case.

Overall, it’s an exceptional short-course truck from one of the world’s most reputable RC brands!

The Redcat Racing Blackout SC 1/10 Short Course RC Truck is a fairly affordable option that still offers decent performance and durability. Available in a 1/10 scale it’s large enough to thrill any RC enthusiast, and it measures almost 47 cm long.

One of the best options for ‘bashing’, this model has an innovative chassis with several swappable components. It offers excellent durability, while the oil-filled shock and four-wheel independent suspensions ensure it’s able to tackle any surface; whether you’re blasting around the yard or heading out to race.

Additionally, this truck features a 4×4 drivetrain, providing improved handling and great traction.

It’s equipped with a waterproof brushed ESC which allows you to drive it through puddles and on muddy tracks.

There’s a 3000MaH NiMH battery pack included, as well as a charger. All you need to provide is AA batteries for the transmitter. The battery lasts between 15 and 20 minutes, which is on the lower end for electric RC vehicles.

A couple of minor limitations. The first is that the range on the remote isn’t the best, which makes driving in open areas more difficult. The battery compartment is also a little difficult to access, although this is to keep it dry when driving through puddles.

All in all, I’d happily recommend this as a durable mid-range option for hobbyists looking for some off-road RC fun. Its solid construction and good handling means it’ll appeal to beginners just as much as experienced drivers.

For a budget option with a stand-out design, look no further than the Pro-line Racing 1967 Ford F-100 Heatwave Short Course RC Truck. This model has a realistic scale appearance that perfectly replicates the Ford F-100 Heatwave. Every detail has been considered, making this black and gold replica a great collector’s item.

It’s fairly durable and made from pre-cut tough color polycarbonate. The shell is a touch thin, so may not stand up to very rigorous driving. But with such a beautiful design, you’re not going to want to drive too aggressively anyway!

The off-road capabilities are also commendable. It delivers impressive stability, traction and maneuverability, making it suitable for both smooth surfaces and off-road tracks. The chassis and robust suspension system ensure that it can handle jumps and rugged terrains.

While it doesn’t need full assembly, you do need to add stickers and mount the body onto the truck, so it’s not completely ready to run. The instructions are detailed and this makes getting it ready very easy.

In conclusion, this truck is an excellent choice for hobbyists who appreciate scale realism and top-notch performance. The attention to detail, good off-road capabilities and 1/10 scale ensure it stands out from the crowd.

If you’ve got a larger budget, you could consider the Team Associated 70019 Trophy Rat Short Course Truck. This model has all the features you’d expect from a higher-end model, including a powerful brushless motor and water-resistant speed control.

Available in a 1/10 scale, this model is large enough to be exciting for any user, but there have been no compromises made when it comes to detail. It’s a replica of the Northup Fabrication Trophy Rat, and the detailing is second to none.

It has a water-resistant brushless speed control and a 3300kV brushless motor that allows it to reach some serious speeds.

The Dynamic Vehicle Control receiver unit has a built-in adjustable digital gyro, which maintains stability across various terrains. The LED lights on both the front and rear round up the awesome design!

The suspension is also commendable, with 12 mm big bore coil-over shocks. The realistic off-road wheels and tires help maintain grip across most surfaces, although some users have opted to upgrade these.

There is a battery included, although many users also upgrade these to achieve more speed

This model strikes the perfect balance between power and handling. Having said that, it is more of an advanced car so beginners may prefer a different model.

Tips for Buying a Short Course RC Truck

  1. The first thing to consider is the size of your new vehicle. The models I have recommended are around 1/10 size, but if you don’t have a lot of space to drive, you may want to consider something a little smaller. Most short-course RC trucks are in either a ⅛ or 1/10 scale.
  2. Each model of RC will be designed for different terrains. Off-road RC trucks should be equipped with features that allow them to tackle harsh landscapes, such as good suspension and shock absorbers
  3. The battery life is an important factor when purchasing an electric short-course RC truck. Most have a battery life lasting around 20 – 30 minutes, and some will come with an extra battery included
  4. The build quality is worth considering. Short-course trucks are designed for racing and bashing, so they need to be able to withstand tough driving.

FAQs

Can short-course RC trucks be used for racing?

Yes, short-course RC trucks are commonly used for racing. Many tracks organize competitive races specifically for short-course RC trucks.

What’s the difference between a 2WD and a 4WD RC truck?

2WD RC trucks send power to only two of the wheels, whereas 4WD trucks deliver power to all the wheels.

This means 4WD trucks generally have better traction and handling, although they are more expensive.

Can I upgrade my short-course RC truck?

This will depend on the brand but in most cases, yes you should have upgrade options available. Enhance the performance by upgrading components such as the motor, suspension, shocks, tires and electronics.

Check for availability of spare and upgradeable parts before you make a purchase.

Are short-course RC trucks suitable for beginners?

They can be suitable for beginners but you should check this before purchasing. Those with more complicated handling can be harder to get to grips with, while models with simpler functionality are ideal for learning.
